The Great Epiphany

Exciting news this week, Callum discovered that his hands are connected to his body via the arms! He is beginning to reach for various objects near him and he often gets his thumb in his mouth after a few attempts. It has been very interesting and amazing to watch this discovery take place, from the fumbling and complete lack of control of his hands to grasping for his mobile that is attached to the changing table. That even the greatest of men pass through this stage of development is amazing to me, all share in this process.

Cacophonous Computer Crash

Life has been a bit hectic of late. One of our computers' hard drives noisily ceased to function two days ago. Unfortunately, it was the computer we had been storing all of the Callum's photographs on, so they are all gone except a few prints we had made. Oh well, there are more important issues in life. Callum is healthy and well and he continues to grow and develop at a rapid rate. Today is his two week appointment at the pediatrician and we expect all to go well.

The Learning Curve of New Parents is Great

Things to Avoid as New Parents... and Old Parents
  1. Removing one diaper from a baby boy without some having sort of deflection device.
  2. Allowing your baby to have plumber's bottom and not notice until it is too late.
  3. Holding your baby above your head just after he or she has eaten (not something we learned from personal experience.)
  4. Anything that increases your chances of becoming contaminated with any of your child's bodily fluids.
  5. Leaving a dirty diaper within the baby's grasp while changing him or her.
  6. Trying to use logic and reasoning skills to convince your baby he or she is not hungry, dirty, tired, or gassy.

Callum!

We are pleased to be able to introduce to you Callum Maxwell. Callum was born at 6:53am on Monday February 5th. He weighed 7lbs 7oz and is 19 and 1/4 inches long. We are so excited that he's here! His hobbies are eating, sleeping, and making funny faces and, according to Erin, "cute" noises. He was born with a full head of hair, which will soon rival the amount that is on my own head sadly enough. Many people have inquired about the meaning and origin of his name. Callum is a Scottish name that means 'dove', but we didn't choose the name just for its meaning, though we do enjoy the correlation to the Holy Spirit. The Scottish heritage that runs in my family led us to search for a Scottish name that met a number of criteria, which we will spare you, that we laid down at the beginning of the ominous search for the perfect baby name. Callum is a healthy and active baby and a true answer to prayer.
